With television news in tow, President Jimmy Carter and Governor Richard Thornburgh visited the control room of the plant. Their presence reassured many that the area must be safe, or they would not have visited the island; for others their presence was a staged way to calm fears.
Some of those who had evacuated began to return to their homes. President Carter’s visit to the plant was particularly important because he is, himself, a nuclear scientist.
Dickinson College began its “Reactions to the Reactor” project, and eventually interviewed more that four hundred individuals about their experience of the emergency.
